So, once Jok and I settled on the basic idea of a race comic, I set out to try something different things in terms of presentation, storytelling, and flow.
With all of my writing, pacing is a key tool I like to play with and use to my advantage. Design-wise the main thing I wanted Jok to look at was J.H. Williams’ excellent ECHOLANDS.
ECHOLANDS embodies the type of creative aspirations that I hope we all know that we should have. It isn’t a safe comic, standing out on the LCS shelves like an oddity. But, inside, the pages are perfectly timed with their reading flow. It grabs you by the throat and pulls you through its story. Every time I pick up an issue, I know it’s going to throw me through the pages.
With a race comic, this felt like another great tool. Going horizontal this way, as opposed to the top/down approach I initially thought of doing, makes you feel the power of the engines as they race to the finish line.
Jok really nailed that by going this way. It all feels superchaged.
NEXT, I’ll talk about the stakes of ALL IN and how important they are to telling stories.
Make sure to sign up for ALL IN, launching Sept 21st!
