Hey there Space Cadets!
Today I’m going to share with you how we’ve been putting together ALL IN!
CONCEPT
So, we start with what started in my head. Throughout the past few years making comics I’ve enjoyed playing with the form. It’s been fun trying to come up with unique ways to read comics, Willy Boyd’s evolving narration perspective, A GAME OF DOUBLES split endings, Attila’s madness.
ALL IN started with the thought of turning the book around and reading it top-down. That’s how I started with the idea, thinking of this race that would flow downward instead of sectioned into side by side pages. Because I knew I was going to have the focus be on two racers I wanted to have them feel separated when we read them on the page.
I tapped Jok Lp to play with this one. Like I showed last week, we had a lot of fun doing ONLY BAD THINGS HAPPEN AT NIGHT. I knew he’d have even more fun with this.
I set to writing the script and handed it over to Jok.
He quickly abandoned my idea of top-down and went with a left-right layout. I was hesitant at first but once I saw the pages I was glad he trusted his instincts. The race has so much more energy to it, reading it this way, you can feel it.
Take a look at it:
Doesn’t that just jazz you up?
Next time I’ll talk about the story and share some of the influences on it.
